Supreme Court Seat: Just Another Day, Another Power Play?

“But the relationship of morality and power is a very subtle one. Because ultimately power without morality is no longer power.”

(James Baldwin)

The political world lit up yesterday with news that a spot will be opening up on the supreme court.

After the messiness of the Trump admin rushing in super conservative Amy Coney Barrett in 2020, after also adding Brett Kavanaugh in 2017 during his one presidential term, democrats are eager to fill the space with a liberal judge- ideally a Black woman.

It is still so strange that the supposed most powerful, non-biased court in the land has become yet another chance for power play and polarization.

Yes, we would love and hope to see a Black woman on the high court, and we are already preparing for the battle with left and right, red and blue.

Even the fight just amongst the democrats, which is the key reason voting rights failed last week.

Not to mention, rather than honoring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and his good work on the court all these years, everyone is so quick to send him away to try to fulfill their party needs.

We keep coming back to the system being broken. Irreparably so. The last four years have screamed this over and over again, though it has been apparent since the very inception of a country based on white supremacy values.

Yet there are brilliant people here. There is such potential for justice, healing, freedom, education, abundance.

It would be nice to think the right person on the Supreme Court might bring us closer to that reality- and we will cheer hard for the Black female judge who has more than earned a place on that bench- but based on past experience, it is another act in the circus of the Unites States government.
