Stop the Hate!

“Anti-Asian hate crime increased by 339 percent last year compared to the year before, with New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other cities surpassing their record numbers in 2020.”

After reading about the murder of Christina Luna Yee, another young Asian American woman killed recently, we turned our attention to Asian hate crimes and were devastated to find an immense increase in hate crimes toward Asian Americans, fuel by the pandemic.

The study was a compilation of data, published by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, and it also revealed, not surprisingly:

“That Black Americans remained the most targeted group across most cities. In New York, the Jewish community reported the most hate crimes last year, with researchers, in part, linking increases to the three-week Gaza War in May. In Chicago, gay men were the most targeted. In terms of location, Los Angeles “recorded the most hate crimes of any U.S. city this century” in 2021 alone, with New York coming in just behind it.”

We also read over the texts coming out in Ahmaud Arbery’s killers latest case, and it is disgusting how many White people truly hate Black people, asian folks and essentially anyone different from their cis hetero white identity.

Hate is the real disease in this country, in this world, and like Covid, it is not going anywhere… but unlike Covid, the case are not currently going down, they are increasing at even more terrifying speeds., and the variants are devastating.

The truth is:

“Especially during a time when groups are trying to divide and pit vulnerable communities against each other, we must remember that we are stronger together”

We are stronger together. Do the work to look at your own fear and bias, If you hold privilege, how can you use it to protect more vulnerable communities? The words of Dr. King continue to ring true, may we all remember and work towards love.

“Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.”
