Black Women Matter

Two Connecticut Black women, on the same day (12/12) were found dead.

Neither case were taken seriously by police.

Today, almost two months later, the mayor states two police officers were suspended.

This is not enough.

too little, too late.

23 year old Lauren Smith-Fields and 53 year old Brenda Rawls, died under suspicious circumstances.

Lauren’s death was actually reported by an older white guy she had met three days earlier on bumble- and the cops just let him go- telling the family he was “nice.” They claim she died of an accidental fentanyl overdose while on the date- but her family tells other stories of bloody sheets and used condoms being on the scene. At the very least, this man should have been arrested until her apartment was searched for more information.

Rawls also died in a similar circumstance- a male acquaintance claiming he found her unresponsive.

The police were so quick to dismiss, ignore and avoid getting to the truth of these cases.

yet we know, when a white woman is found dead in suspicious circumstances, it becomes a national case!

Last week, we posted an a young Black teen, Tioni Theus, who was found dead on the highway, clearly killed, and still, minimal police or public attention.

Also this weekend, the radiant and successful Cheslie Kryst died of suicide.

This 30 year old lawyer and pageant winner had spoken in the past about the toxicity, ageism and racism in the industries and though she may have taken her own life, that decision was aided by the pressures and pain of being a Black woman in this country.

We can’t say enough that Black lives matter. And that Black women matter.

We must protect Black women.

It starts with demanding justice for the ones we could not protect.
