When Will Black Lives Matter?
The phrase “Black Lives Matter” is everywhere.
Hashtags, profiles, shirts, masks, buildings.
But when does it became real and not just words?
Everywhere we look, we see evidence of many people globally not behaving as if Black lives matter.
Both Breonna Taylor and Mak’hiah Bryant, young Black women killed by police, had their killers walk away without punishment this week.
It has been two years since Breonna was killed while sleeping. and no justice for her or her family.
and yet when we post on twitter speaking out about these deaths, we are met with outcry defending the cops.
Or what about the racism still persisting in Europe?
Hundreds and thousands of well documented cases of Africans trying to flee Ukraine and being forced back so white people can leave.
Or Europeans embracing two million Ukrainians while they refused to let in darker skin Syrians just a few years ago?
A brilliant Black athlete, Brittney Griner, is being held essentially hostage in Russia and barely making the news.
We could go on and on and on.
Are you one of these people claiming Black lives matter and then doing all you can to hold on to white privilege?
The truth is, Black lives do matter, they have always mattered and it is far past time for the world to act like it.
What does it look like?
Cops de-escalating without violence.
Folks treated equally regardless of presenting skin tone.
Equal pay, benefits and opportunities from birth to death.
