Training for Educators

Education and leadership are two effective actions toward aiding the uprising for racial justice. Through my research in communicating with several schools throughout Dallas and asking important questions regarding racial relations, I’ve learned that many schools lack anti-bias training and trauma-informed teaching. The schools that had provided similar training offered limited context as to what their training encompassed or how it was implemented. Our biases are largely conditioned and/or subconscious through indoctrination and the work needed to unpack this both individually and collectively is deep. With that awareness, there has to be a deliberate intention and commitment to unlearning and re-programming our patterns. Not only is it critical to have ongoing training, exercises, and workshops accessible to educators and students in schools but it is also necessary that they are led by BIPOC speakers and scholars. We think the implementation of this should be a mandated aspect of the workplace and curriculum to shift the culture and environment in educational institutes and promote the continuity of growth and journey toward racial equity.
