Ignorance, Denial, Willingness: Conversations in Highland Park

“Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”

(Martin Luther King Jr.)

We just reviewed our latest round of videos taken while Co-President Ndure Cain attempts to have conversations with residents of wealthy Highland Park.

AKA, lots of videos of people avoiding talking with us…

Cars in driveway… no one comes to door but Ndure is determined to get the message spread! He continues to show up, knock on doors, pass around fliers and try to open up honest and real dialogue about the gap between education in this area and DISD.

It is important to acknowledge that privilege can also mean that you don’t think something is a problem- because it is not a problem for you- or your kids- as is shown perfectly in one video of Ndure speaking to mother who claims she has not even thought about discrepancies in the Dallas education system because her children are pre-school age or younger.

There’s sincere ignorance.

Then, there’s denial. Which could also be described as choosing stupidity…

We are seeking real conversations about education & how to close the wealth gap between neighborhoods-

Another resident claimed, when we came to his door, to know who we are and yet they refuse to even try to connect- because it’s easier to believe we are the problem.

However, Some Highland Park residents get it.

We appreciate you. Your faces bring some light to these often dreary visits.

Which is why we are still here, still trying. We know there are important changes ready to happen.

Are you going to be part of the solution? Or keep adding to the problem?

Are you going to sit in ignorance, denial, stupidity, or wake up to change?
