Honesty & Privilege In Texas
“When it comes to education here in Texas, do you think white privilege exists?”
“Uhhh here in Texas? Here. Yeah, I’d say it does.”
“Thanks for being honest.”
(Conversation at Southern Methodist University between DJN Co-pres Ndure and a student)
“I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I'm a human being, first and foremost, and as such I'm for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.”
― Malcolm X.
Being honest is a start. This simple acknowledgement of white privilege is a start. When more people can start being honest with themselves, we open the door to honesty with each other, and this is where our conversations can start to lead us to the changes that will benefit humanity as a whole.
Why is it so hard for some people to just pause and say, honestly, Yes. Racism does exist. White privilege does exist. Here and now. We appreciate every one who spoke to us at our meet and greet at SMU, those who speak with us anytime we are out on the streets.
