Calling out Racism in Cricket
“It’s an open secret. I’ve seen that if you speak out, your life is made hell.”
Pakistani Cricket player, Azeem Rafiq, on racism in his sport
Yet another athlete of color is speaking out against the on-going racist abuse that occurs in every country towards BIPOC, but especially places like the United States and England.
Rafiq was humiliated and treated poorly by even teammates who claimed to be “mates.”
He recognizes that speaking out has consequences, and we at DJN commend his bravery in voicing the trauma and violence he has endured.
Enough is enough.
The chairman at Yorkshire Cricket Club has resigned following Rafiq’s statements and we hope there will be a lot more change in England and in the US around the open secret of harming Black and Brown bodies in sports and in every other area where racism rears its ugly head.
