The Future of Voting Rights
More disappointment from the current powers that be in our supposed government…
“Conservative Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin announced that he is not supporting the transformative voting rights bill, the For the People Act, because of lack of bipartisan support.
Manchin is wrong; the bill has overwhelming bipartisan support among voters -- 67% of Americans support the bill, 56% of Republicans and 68% of independent voters. It's Republican lawmakers that are too afraid of Trump and his deplorable followers that are the partisan problem.
Republican lawmakers in red states are waging an assault on democracy by trying to stop people from voting. They have already enacted more than 20 laws making it harder to cast your ballot. With a handful of state legislatures still in session, we can expect that number to grow. Not only would The For the People Act put a stop to the tactics Republicans are using to suppress voting rights, but it would also outlaw partisan gerrymandering, and reform campaign finance laws. No wonder Republicans hate this bill!
Manchin is living in some fantasy land where he thinks Mitch McConnell (who just came out against the John Lewis Voting Rights Act) and the other Senate Republicans are going to play nice and actually compromise on voting rights bills.”
