Everyone is So Excited…
Everyone is so excited to celebrate Juneteenth while I am over here in Texas finding more excitement in watching paint dry.
Freedom where?
Celebrate what?
That maybe just maybe another life won’t be taken over the weekend due to some bias made up fear or potential threat at the hands of a gun toting police officer.
I am with Erin Stewart Mauldin when she says, “Juneteenth is neither the beginning nor the end of something.
The end of Civil War and the ending of slavery didn’t happen overnight and was a lot more like a jagged edge than a clean cut.”
It is said that in confederate states slaves were freed as early as January 1, 1863 when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln.
Unfortunately it was only as good as the enforcement of the Union’s army.
Freedom seems like it is news to African Americans as I feel bound and shackled when I drive past homes in Texas proudly STILL displaying the confederate flag.
Why is that ok?
How is it still accepted?
You all can have your day, your 24 hours to celebrate a freedom that has yet to exist, I however won’t celebrate until I am treated equally, I am heard and have equal opportunities in this country.
