Environmental Injustice In West Dallas

According to City-data, the demographics of West Dallas in 2019 show approximately 10% of the population as White with the remaining 90% of the population comprised of BIPOC and AAPI. It is no surprise that Singleton Boulevard in West Dallas is the recently proposed site for the “development” of a new concrete batch plant. Dallas has a long harmful history of environmental racism rooted in redlining practices, permit zoning, and segregation. Toxic pollutants and dumpsites are often permitted and constructed within black and brown communities throughout Dallas, which further heightens pre-existing health risks and death rates evolving from living within an environment that has reduced greenery and plant life in juxtaposition to predominantly white neighborhoods with cleaner and better air quality. The community is speaking out and fighting against this environmental injustice as multiple cement plants are already in existence within proximity of the proposed location along Singleton Boulevard. Our city continues to show us that our lives don't matter to them. We matter and our communities deserve to breathe.
