Ahmaud Arbery’s Killers Convicted
A taste of victory for the loved ones of Ahmaud Arbery today in Georgia.
The three white men who murdered Arbery were all found guilty of murder.
Ben Crump, attorney for Arbery’s father, spoke outside the courthouse, saying repeatedly, “The spirit of Ahmaud defeated the lynch mob.”
In February of 2020, 25 year old Arbery was out for a run. The three men saw him, chased him in a truck and shot him. One of them filmed it.
Nearly two months later, once the video became viral, the people demanded the arrest of the killers.
“It’s been a long fight. It’s been a hard fight. But God is good,” she (Arbery’s mother) said. Of her son, she said, “He will now rest in peace.”
A nine-count indictment charged all three men with one count of malice murder, four counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of false imprisonment and one count of criminal attempt to commit a felony, in this case false imprisonment.
Travis McMichael was convicted of all nine charges. Greg McMichael was convicted of all charges except malice murder. Bryan was convicted of two counts of felony murder, one count of aggravated assault, one count of false imprisonment and one count of criminal attempt to commit a felony.
The three men still wait sentencing from the judge as well as federal charges still to come based on Arbery’s murder as a hate crime.
Hopefully, this streak of justice will continue and this case will become the new norm in racist violence.
Al Sharpton, civil rights activist and founder of National Action Network, speaking outside the court:
Arbery’s parents “lost a son”, Sharpton said: “But their son will go down in history as one that proved that if you hold on justice will come.”
