A Message to Our White Allies: Progress Requires Sacrifice
Thank you for being part of the Dallas Justice Now cause. Our problems are stark. Dallas is one of the most segregated cities in America and shows no signs of changing without consequential action.
The following is from a piece by Pew Trusts in October 2018:
Dallas is a city of stark opposites. To look at a color-coded map of Dallas neighborhoods tells the tale: whites to the north, blacks to the south, Latinos mostly to the west and east. Here, there are literally cities within the city, such as the overwhelmingly white Highland Park, population 8,950, median income above $200,000, a micro-city populated with high-end designer boutiques and newly renovated bungalows boasting signs emblazoned with “BETO U.S. Senate 2018,” for Beto O’Rourke.
With disparities worsening year after year and the wealth gap between black and white growing even more stark from COVID-19, these trying times call for historic solutions.
Our community has gotten nowhere because our white allies have done next to nothing for us. That must change. If you want to be an ally of our movement, we demand you make sacrifices to remedy the trillions of dollars you have made from the hundreds of years when you have subjugated us.
On Thursday, Dallas Justice Now began sending out copies of the historic College Pledge to our wealthy white allies in 95% white Highland Park and University Park.
If you have received a copy of the pledge and consider yourself an ally to our community, please visit www.DallasJustice.org to sign and participate in this unprecedented campaign to bridge the wealth and education gap.
More pledges will be sent out in the coming days and weeks. Dallas Justice Now advocates will be paying in-person visits to residences to have those impactful in person conversations.
Thank you for being involved with Dallas Justice Now but remember that being “involved” is not enough to make a difference.
We need volunteers to spread the message.
We need donors to help fund our work.
We need members of the media to make sure everyone hears the call for justice.
If you can help, please help.
